A few weeks ago I hosted a Coaster class. It was awesome! The Faith in Nature coasters were designed and colored by a dear friend, Sue K. She did an outstanding job! I just loved them and just had to share them with you. Thank you Sue for the inspiration!
There are a couple of ways you can color the coasters and well as set them. I have tried both and well… I have landed on glazing them. You can bake your tiles at 350 for 20 – 30 minutes to set them. I haven’t had much luck with this process. The nice thing about baking them is that they tile is still pores which means it will help soak up sweat or condensation from the glass. I do like to use a Matte glaze on my coasters. It does hinder the absorption of the coaster but it doesn’t change the great look of them. You’ll have to give both a try and determine which way you like best.
To get started you need to visit Lowes or Home Depot and pick out a few tiles. I have done several tiles of all shapes and sizes. Its just what you prefer. Honestly, I have spent hours sitting on the floor at Lowes going through each and every tile. I like the tiles that have the various pores in them but I don’t want really deep and really wide holes. So I am very picky!!! It does take lots of time.
Both of these coaster I stamped my image with StazOn and used a blender pen with pastels. Pretty Cool!!!
After you pick out your tiles you will want to lightly wipe the dust off and clean them. Let them dry completely! Next, find your stamp set and ink the image up really, really good with StazOn Black Ink. StazOn is a permanent ink and will absorb well into your coaster. Using a blender pen and some Stampin pastels you can begin to color your tiles. I usually start with the lighter color and then let my coaster dry. I then find a darker green or darker red and go over them again until I achieve the desired level of color. Keeping in mind that the color will appear a bit dull but once you glaze it… they will pop beautifully!!!
Here is a Solider coaster did the same night. I haven’t put a my message on it yet; however, I just loved it! The colors turned out so vibrant. I am thinking I will stamp a message of courage or thanks on it and purchase a plate stand. This is a beautiful decoration for a coffee table or shelf.
The glaze that I have used is a permanent, protective matte finish Krylon. Dries very quickly; however, make sure the area you spray it is well ventilated. Give it a try!!! Let me know how it goes. I’d love to share a picture of your coaster creation so email me a photo. Don’t forget to purchase your felt circles for the bottoms. Some ladies like to use cork; however, I tend to use the felt circles. Have a great day!!!
I love the solider one, did you hand draw it or is the image from a stamp. If stamp do you recall the set its from?
Thank you ladies for the kind comments and for stopping by BrandysCards. Yes, of course I will share and tell all. I just hadn’t gotten around to the details; however, it should all be there now. Let me know if I missed something. I hope you give coasters a try. It so fun and super easy!!! I wish you all a blessed day!!! Brandy
Very pretty! I love the stamp set and the colors used.
Hi Brandy,
I love these coasters too and I have this set now. I might just do them for some Birthday gifts.
I’ve done coasters too but I am wondering how these were done? Were they baked in the oven or just coated with Clear spray.
I made sets of four for Christmas gifts one year.
Thanks for sharing Brandy
